Safer sex isn’t just about pregnancy prevention. It’s about pleasure without panic. Here’s your checklist.
First, get tested regularly. Every 3-6 months if you have new partners. Most STIs are curable or manageable.
Second, use barriers: condoms, dental dams, or gloves. Yes, for oral too.
Third, talk about status before sex. “I got tested on [date]. My results were negative for everything except HSV1 (cold sores). What about you?” If they can’t have that conversation, don’t have sex.
Fourth, consider PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) for HIV prevention – talk to a doctor.
Fifth, get the HPV vaccine if you haven’t. It prevents cancer.
Sixth, pee after sex to prevent UTIs.
Seventh, use lube. Lots of it. Reduces microtears and STI risk.
Eighth, don’t douche. It disrupts healthy bacteria.
Ninth, check your body regularly for bumps, sores, or discharge.
Tenth, know your local sexual health clinic. Bookmark it.
Safer sex = better sex because you’re not worrying. Be proactive, not reactive.
