The first five seconds are not just about what you do in the moment. They are about what you do before the moment. Here is a 15-minute pre-date ritual that will prime your body and mind for a perfect first impression.
Minute 1–3: The Power Pose
Stand in a private place (bathroom, car, bedroom). Adopt a “power pose.” Stand tall. Arms raised. Chin up. Hold for two minutes. Research by Amy Cuddy shows that power poses increase testosterone (confidence) and decrease cortisol (stress).
Minute 4–6: The Breathing Exercise
Sit down. Close your eyes. Breathe in for 4 seconds. Hold for 4. Exhale for 4. Repeat five times. This calms your nervous system.
Minute 7–9: The Visualization
Close your eyes. Visualize the date going well. See yourself walking in. See yourself smiling. See yourself making eye contact. See yourself having a great conversation. Visualization primes your brain for success.
Minute 10–12: The Self-Talk
Look in the mirror. Say: “I am enough. I am confident. I am warm. I am present. I am here to connect, not to impress.”
Minute 13–15: The Final Check
Check your appearance. Teeth clean. Hair tidy. Clothes straight. Breath fresh. Then, take one final deep breath. You are ready.
